Top 5 – Movies Coming to Netflix in December
I skipped this piece last month because other than Boyhood (2014) and the new Gilmore Girls season, November was a very light month. But, December offers a number of great movies ranging from sports movies, comedy, gangster, and one of the best movies of 2016. Here are my picks for the best movies coming to Netflix in December.
You can see the full list of all movies and T.V. shows coming out this month right here.
5 – D2: THE MIGHTY DUCKS (Sam Weisman, 1994)
The Mighty Ducks franchise is one of the most consistent franchises in cinematic history. I’m dead serious about that. Every film, from the first to the made-for-T.V. third film, are all fun sports fables about teamwork with exciting hockey scenes. The second one, D2, is the best of the three. It puts the Ducks against their biggest opponent yet, the Gunner Stahl-led Team Iceland, and pushes the team through its toughest battles with each other, including new players with a lot of egos, including from coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez). This is one of Disney’s finest sports movies, and always a blast to watch.
4 – LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN (Paul McGuigan, 2006)
Lucky Number Slevin is one of the trickiest movies I have ever seen. This is a fast talking, twisty thriller about a case of mistaken identity, rabbi’s, gangsters, and gambling. The all-star cast of Josh Hartnett (his best performance ever), Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, Lucy Lu, and Bruce Willis are all perfect, spitting the rapid fire dialog with great comedic timing and dramatic touches. This is a movie that keeps taking turn after turn, keeping us intrigued the entire time until the ending which I never saw coming. This plays out like the younger step-brother to Pulp Fiction (1994), and I love every moment of it.
3 – BEVERLY HILLS COP (Martin Brest, 1984)
Eddie Murphy was the king in the 80’s, consistently putting out hit after hit, critically and commercially. Of all his movies, Beverly Hills Cops is my favorite and the peak of Murphy’s talent. It is the perfect combination of his action chops and his comedic genius. His performance as Axl Foley is iconic and is one of my favorite characters in any movie. This is a smart, entertaining, action-packed cop film and the peak of Eddie Murphy’s career.
2 – NATIONAL LAMPOON’S ANIMAL HOUSE (John Landis, 1978)
Straight to the point; this is a comedy classic. John Landis’s look at the shenanigans of a fraternity house is one of the funniest, raunchiest movies I have ever seen. With non-stop drinking and debauchery, with little schooling involved, we watch the Delta Tau Chi house poorly attempt to not get expelled by the straight-edge Dean Wormer (John Vernon). This also features my favorite John Belushi performance, he steals the whole movie with some iconic scenes and lines, including his motivational, World War II speech where the Germans bomb Pearl Harbor. If you haven’t seen this classic, do it immediately.
1 – CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (The Russo Brothers, 2016)
Disney’s deal with Netflix is legitimately one of my favorite things to happen in 2016. I’ve gushed and gushed about Captain America: Civil War since I first saw it in April, so I’ll keep this brief. This is one of the best comic book movies of all-time. It is an epic, fun, expertly made movie that elevates the Marvel Cinematic Universe to new levels. We get a great mix of old characters we love and new characters, who we now love. The airport scene is one of the best of the series and the ending leaves it open enough to intrigue us for the next movies. You can read my full review right here, but this is one of the very best movies of 2016.
